MCBA Annual Beekeeping Class

Are you interested in learning about honey bees? Do you want to keep your own hives and become a beekeeper, or are you just curious about what that involves? Then this is the course for you. This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of beekeeping. We welcome anyone who has an interest in the honey bee.

For the past 30+ years, the Madison County Beekeepers Association has been providing an in-depth introduction to beekeeping class. We will again offer this class in January and it will be offered as one in-person event followed by 4 an online classes on Tuesday nights. The course is designed to provide the beginner beekeeper with all the information needed to get started managing honey bees.

Virtual Practical Beekeeping Course 2024 — Time and Dates:

Part 1 – Introduction to Beekeeping

In Part 1 we will start learning the basics about honey bees, beekeeping equipment, and the various ways to get bees.

  • Saturday, January 6th – 8 am – 4 pm
  • In- Person at Huntsville Botanical Garden & Online via Zoom (both options available)

Part 2 – Hive Management Thru the Year

In Part 2 we will continue our bee education learning how to manage a honey bee colony through all of the seasons of your first year. This will include more details of how a honey bee colony works, bee diseases and pests, and everyone’s favorite topic….honey!

  • Session 2.1 – Tuesday, January 9th, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Online
  • Session 2.2 – Tuesday, January 16th, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Online
  • Session 2.3 – Tuesday, January 23rd, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Online
  • Session 2.4 – Tuesday, January 30th, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Online

Each session in the series will cover a different topic or subject in beekeeping, so you’ll want to attend them all. There is a LOT to learn, and you’ll have fun doing it!

Video Recordings – Recordings will be made available for a limited time in case students have to miss a session.

Cost (includes all sessions in Part 1 & Part 2)

  • Online Attendance $25
  • In-Person – Individual (includes online access for Part 2)- $30 (no lunch) or $45 (lunch included)
  • In-Person – Family (includes online access for Part 2) $35 (no lunch), $50 (1st lunch included), $15 per additional family member lunch
  • Registration includes a one-year membership in MCBA
  • Lunch Option – The option for a tasty boxed lunch are available for purchase online at the time of registration, or feel free to bring your own. We do not recommend going offsite from the Garden for lunch due to the limited time available. Lunch ticket sales will end on Dec 30th due to catering lead times. Lunch cost includes taxes, delivery fees, and processing fees.

Class size is limited, and advance registration is required!

You are welcome to share access among other members within your household. We very much encourage families to come and learn together.

You will get an email with the Zoom meeting log in information approximately 48 hours prior to the class. Please make sure that you have downloaded the Zoom app so you can log into our class. A Zoom account is free.
